WOMEN AND HUMOR
What is humor? The quality of being amusing or comic, especially as
expressed in literature or speech. It’s a stereotype that women and humor cannot go together. Have you ever
heard someone saying “She is too funny for a woman”! Assuming women can’t be
funny, people tend to appreciate men’s humor more than women. While men’s joke is
valued, the same doesn’t go for women.
This actually has a brief history...
Since ancient times, humor was considered to be a man’s job. One of
the most powerful cultural critics of the 19th century- Richard Grant White in his journal The Critic said that humor is “the rarest of
qualities in a woman” Wit, after
all is the unfailing symptom of intelligence.
In the famous issue of Vanity Fair Magazine "Why Women Aren't Funny", published in January 2007, Christopher
Hitchens asks female readers to think back to that one time they had a man make
them laugh so hard that their stomachs began to hurt. This is indicating that a
man doesn't have to look attractive for you to be attracted to him. Hitchens
uses humor to make women laugh. Wit and humor are undying
manifestations of intelligence.
Hitchens further states that Mother Nature is not so kind toward men. The primary task of a man is to impress the opposite sex, he had better be able to make the lady laugh. In other words, for women, the question of funniness is essentially a secondary one.
Women preferred romantic and men with a better sense of humor as it indicates a sign of intellect. So, while women prefer partners who can easily make them laugh, men prefer partners who will laugh at their jokes. Men are more attracted towards women who laugh as it shows they are ebullient, understanding, and enthusiastic. Wit, after all, is the unfailing symptom of intelligence.
It means that throughout our evolutionary history, the job of a man is to make women laugh. Men show their intelligence through humor.
Although in an article in BBC Researchers found that 63% of men were funnier than the average woman. Women are funny just that compared to average they aren’t and this is where the stereotype is that women aren’t funny.
So, if men and women are capable of being equally
funny, then why is women’s humor challenging to recognize?
The problem isn’t that women are not funny, it's
just that it's unappreciated.
The social factor contributes the most to it. The
image of a woman should be ladylike, elegant, obedient, and submissive. Women expressing
humor isn’t ladylike and this is why since ancient times humor has been considered a man's
domain.
So the answer to the question is social and not biological. For decades, the no. of female standup comedians are more than those of males. Again, women who take up jobs as standup comedians are audacious, and for a woman to show her humor in front of everyone is threatening. Be that as it may, this doesn't have anything to do with male joke artists being more relatable.
Most ladies are somewhat more saved and attempt not to relax which makes their humor unfunny. Though now we have seen amusing and hilarious female humorists who make us snicker from our stomachs. Be it Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, LucilleBall, Aditi Mittal, Radhika Vaz, or Bharti Singh. These women are a long way from being saved or being stodgy and attempt to make truly unfunny and rather dim subjects "entertaining". These women have ended the long stereotype that women can't be funny.
TO CONCLUDE-
Ladies aren't entertaining as a larger part of individuals accept humor to be a public trait or quality and ladies don't 'have a place in the open arena moreover humor shows a certain feeling of enthusiastic hostility which again is a major no for ladies as ladies ought to be 'meek' and 'rich' and any kind of animosity from ladies makes them unwanted. The majority of the jokes are on ladies and about ladies. Yet, we are believed to be lame.....most of the jokes are analyzed and we realize one lady can condemn different ladies in a manner more bright tone than a man so normally we ladies are acceptable comics.
If you find it relatable, do comment about it!
